Oils for Hair Growth?

I’m always on the prowl for some good hair care products, especially ones that help with hair growth. Take it from someone that once had to grow out a pixie cut so short, they had to wear a hat for a solid month. It’s me. I’m getting the ick just thinking about it. If I’d had the knowledge I’m about to bestow upon you back then, I wouldn’t have been so traumatized. I’m bequeathing you lovelies with this supreme knowledge of hair oils that are known to help with growth. Do with it what you will, the power is all yours now.

What’s causing my hair loss?

Okay, did you know that the number one cause of hair loss is stress? Yes, babes, all that pent up anxiety and stress and worry that comes with just being a human right now is actually causing your hair loss. Yeesh. As if I didn’t need something else to stress about. My stress is causing me stress. Of course, hair loss can be a result of other underlying medical conditions too, but for those with just a life full of stressors, your hair loss is most likely because of that. Cool. Love that. Not.

What oils are good for hair growth?

Let’s all take a nice deep breath and relaxing bath or trip to a foreign country and never come back. But really, I might just peace out y’all. Everyone chill now? Good because there is hope for at least one of the issues (I can’t help with the other stress. Just do the “move out of the country thing.”) I’m here to give you hope in the form of the best hair oils to use for thinning hair. I’ve sifted through enough “try these products” to last a lifetime, which is why we’re getting this information from actual professionals.

Peptides

We love us some peptides in skincare, so why not in hair care as well? The ones specifically for hair care you want to look out for are copper peptides and pea protein. Pea proteins can help with inflammation on the scalp (inflammation can cause hair loss). They can also boost the production of keratin to help your hair’s strength.

Minoxidil

This little miracle is actually the only scientifically proven ingredient from this list that stimulates hair growth! Minoxidil widens the blood vessels to allow more oxygen to reach the hair follicles, causing the hair to grow. This ingredient is in your dad’s favorite hair growth product whose infomercial will always be imprinted in my head, Rogaine.

What oils are meh for hair growth?

Rosemary oil

You’ve probably heard the hype around rubbing rosemary oil into your scalp to help eliminate hair loss. While there is plenty of “evidence” from people swearing by it, the effects have yet to be verified scientifically. Although, the act itself of scalp massaging, could be a way to stimulate the hair follicles.

Castor oil

Castor oil has been a hair care staple since your grandma was a girl. Its moisturizing properties are definitely hard to beat, but as far as aiding with hair growth? Sorry to disappoint, but there is no evidence to suggest that it does.

Argan oil

Argan oil is great for protecting hair from UV rays, but it’s not specifically known to help with hair growth.

Tretinoin

Tretinoin is having its moment on social media because it’s known to enhance the effects of minoxidil. Tretinoin is a type of retinol that works to increase cell turnover, however, retinol in general hasn’t officially been linked to helping the hair strands themselves.

Folic Acid

Although folic acid or vitamin B9 is essential to hair health, if it’s not a vitamin you’re missing in your diet, adding it into hair products probably won’t be adding anything super beneficial to hair growth

Biotin

Biotin (B7), like folic acid, is only beneficial if you are lacking that particular vitamin in your diet. Most people don’t have a biotin deficiency, so it’s not going to help with hair growth.

If you’re a fan of some of our “meh” hair growth products, don’t fret because most of them have other killer properties too so they’re not bad ingredients! And, hey, ever heard of the placebo effect, positive vibes, and manifesting? You swear by those products, then maybe they do work for hair growth for you.
